General Cardiovascular Fellowship Program Curriculum
The curriculum is designed to fulfill the cardiovascular disease requirements based on the COCATS4 recommendations. We have 13 rotations per year divided into 4-week blocks. Over the course of the 3 year clinical fellowship, our fellows rotate through 24 months of clinical training. This includes 9-12 months of clinical cardiology rotations including CCU, cardiac consultation, electrophysiology, and heart failure / cardiac transplantation services. Additional time in spent in the various other subspecialties, including 4 month of echocardiography, stress testing / nuclear cardiology, and cardiac cath lab experience. They spend an additional 6-12 months of elective time which is concentrated in the third year. The 3rd year curriculum is tailored based along various pathways and tracts based on the fellow’s career choice. We currently offer, whether it be interventional training, advanced cardiac imaging, advanced heart failure and transplantation, electrophysiology, research, or a combination thereof.
Year 1 Rotations:

Continuity Clinics
Each fellow will have on average one half-day clinic weekly in accordance with COCATS4.
Throughout fellowship training, fellows will maintain a weekly (Friday AM) clinic in the Ambulatory Care Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital. Each individual fellow will see patients in this clinic every other week. During the first year, fellows will have alternate week clinics either at UMH or JMH along with a subspecialty attending (Interventional, EP, Heart Failure, etc). Starting in the second year and continuing onto the third year, fellows will have a continuity clinic at the VA. These clinics are held every Wednesday afternoon.
Additionally, fellows may attend specific subspecialty clinics during certain rotations, e.g. Pre-cardiac catheterization clinic at the VA, heart failure/cardiac transplant clinic at JMH, Electrophysiology Clinic at JMH, etc.
Call Structure
General Cardiology Call
We have three call pools for general cardiology, one for each of the hospitals we cover. Call at both JMH and the VA is “home call”. They work with respective house staff in the CCU for overnight admissions. For any given night or weekend, there will be 3 cardiology fellows on call (one for each hospital). Weeknight call starts at 5pm (sign outs occur in the respective hospital’s CCU) and continue until 8am the following day. Weekend call starts Friday at 5pm and ends Monday 8am. Fellows cover admissions overnight, consults, or cardiac catheterization inquiries. STEMI’s and other emergent catheterization procedures are handled by the STEMI interventional call team. Year 1 fellows cover 13 weekend calls per year (average 1 weekend call per rotation), including all holiday weekends, and 1-2 weekday calls per week (including weekday holidays).
Year 2 fellows cover 8-10 weekend calls per year and variable weekday call depending on the assigned rotation (no holidays).
Year 3 fellows cover 1-2 weekend calls per year and variable weekday call depending on the assigned rotation (no holidays).
ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) Call
STEMI call is covered by the interventional fellows and attendings. General fellows are not required to take STEMI call unless there is individual interest.
